The Additional Tier 1 (AT1) primary market has begun 2025 with a bang, with a sterling perpetual non-call seven transaction from NatWest that hit the screens on Wednesday morning set to take issuance over €16bn equivalent year-to-date, more than double the volume we have seen over the same period in each of the last five years.

Federal Reserve (Fed) chair Jerome Powell had the honour of kicking off the 2025 season for the major central banks this week, swiftly followed by the chore of having to plead the fifth every time he was asked about a President Trump policy.

We saw a sell-off across the UK Gilt curve on Wednesday with yields rising by 4bp at the short end and 11bp at the long end. This took the 10-year Gilt to 4.80% and the 30-year Gilt to 5.35%, with the latter bringing the unwelcome headline that UK borrowing costs are at their highest since the last century.

The quantity of cash parked in money market funds has been at the forefront of investors’ minds for some time now. The surge of inflows for these short term risk-free instruments as rates rose was no surprise considering they now yield more than a single-B rated high yield corporate was offering just a few years ago.

Given almost half of the world’s population resides in a country staging an election this year, 2024 was always likely to throw up a series of political headlines.

The last few weeks have seen former President Donald Trump establish a lead over current President Joe Biden across polls in the run-up to November’s US election. Even though it is early days and a lot can change before November (including the Democrat candidate), it is worth considering what a second Trump term might mean for the world economy and for fixed income markets.
